My parents, Harry & Dorothy Drake, were also homesteaders in the Kasota District. This is the first article I have found in all my searching that relates the historical significance of the "GI Homesteaders." I would love to hear from other families who have had this experience. It would be my dream to put something together outlining the homesteading experience of this era.
I remember John and MaryLou very fondly. This is a beautifully written story.

Great article but, Hill City is run solely by Ione Kaylor.....not to diminish Mike's contribution. He was tireless in the restoration effort but, it's clearly Ione's place. She's the heart and soul of Hill City and a great hostess. Stop in on your way to or from Sun Valley.....it's a place frozen in time and it feels like home.

Spent A few summers around that area myself. Drove up through there last fall while I was visiting family in Gooding. Beautiful country. I now live in Oregon but my heart belongs in southern Idaho.

Hey Jason, I thought I was the only one in this country with a Swedish Pancake memory!
My German grandmother made them for me when I was growing up, I then carried on the tradition to my family and now my son and daughter make them for their families. In our family they have evolved to be called Grandma's Pancakes!
Wonderful food memories! And my favorite topping was powdered sugar too.

This is a great story of what can happen when a woman gets her mind set on something! Loved it! Planning a trip up there come spring and looking forward to stopping to see the old place. I just love fixer upper stories!
