This is the first article I have found in all my searching that relates the historical significance of the "GI Homesteaders." I would love to hear from other families who have had this experience. It would be my dream to put something together outlining the homesteading experience of this era. I remember John and MaryLou very fondly. This is a beautifully written story. He was tireless in the restoration effort but, it's clearly Ione's place. She's the heart and soul of Hill City and a great hostess. My German grandmother made them for me when I was growing up, I then carried on the tradition to my family and now my son and daughter make them for their families. In our family they have evolved to be called Grandma's Pancakes! Wonderful food memories! And my favorite topping was powdered sugar too. Hey Jason, I thought I was the only one in this country with a Swedish Pancake memory!
